    Notes
    • Colonel in the Arkansas Militia, 45th regiment, Captain in the Confederate Army Civil War
"Samuel Leslie is said to have visited Searcy County, Arkansas in 1835 and is known to have moved his family there in 1838. He came with his family from Henderson County, TN and located at the mouth of Wiley's Cove, where he was engaged in tilling the soil for four years. He then located on his present farm, a portion of which the town of Leslie now stands. He is one of the oldest residents of Searcy County, for there were but eight or ten families in the Cove when he arrived there, and none of these had been there for longer than two years. Searcy County was then a part of Marion County, and Clinton was the nearest Post office, mill, and trading point. Wiley's Cove was later changed to the name of Leslie, in honor of one of his sons, and Mr. Leslie served as it postmaster until the Civil War.
He was Colonel of the 45th Regiment, Arkansas Militia in 1861. He became Captain in the Confederate Army in Company F, of Col. Matlock's Regiment of Arkansas Infantry, for about 2 years. He was stationed at Little Rock Until the fall of that city, and then at Arkadelphia until he was taken sick and compelled to retire from the service.
He represented Searcy County in the State Legislature more times than any other one man, being elected to that body in 1840, 1846, 1848, 1850 and 1854.
It is said Samuel Leslie had extremely red hair, probably from his Scotch ancestry. He lived for 58 years in and around the area now known as Leslie, AR. From Early Leslies in York County, SC by Marion Emerson Murphy.
"Nola Upson Leslie Boyd sent copies of documents for Samuel Leslie as follows:
      a) Land grant dated April 1, 1857 from President James Buchanan to Sam Leslie for 82 acres of land formerly belonging to the Choctaw Indians. Choctaw Certificate No. 228c and deposited in the Land Office, Washington, D.C., Vol. 2, page 337.
      b) A commission dated Nov. 8, 1861 to Samuel Leslie as Colonel Commandant of the 45th Regiment of the Militia of Arkansas, County of Searcy, signed by H. M. Rector, Governor of Arkansas.
      c) Oath of Office of Samuel Leslie, dated Nov. 27, 1861, swearing allegiance to the Confederate States of America and the State of Arkansas and to the faithful performance of duty as Colonel Commandant of the 45th Regiment. Also he swore as follows: "I have not directly or indirectly been engaged in or in any manner concerned in a duel or given or been the bearer of any challenge to fight a duel in the State of Arkansas since the 1st day of January 1838". From Early Leslies in York County, SC by Vice Admiral Marion Emerson Murphy.
