    • THE CONINES AND HUIES By Sheila Forester.
The following is a brief history of the CONINE and HUIE families. It is comprised of several fascinating pieces of information. The information follows a chronological order of events in the lives of the people in these two families. We want to determine if there is enough evidence to support with reasonable certainty two things. One, does the evidence support the idea that perhaps there is a link between the CONINE'S and HUIE'S of Georgia and the CONINE'S and HUIE'S of Mendham, Morris County New Jersey. Two, could the David CONINE of Greene County, Georgia in 1805 be the same David KANINE mentioned in the 1788 will of a Robert HUIE of Mendham, Morris County, New Jersey, as the husband of Robert's daughter Elizabeth. There were four CONINE individuals in Greene County, Georgia, starting about 1799: Robert, Richard Sr., David, and Nancy CONINE. The first CONINE on record is Robert, who in 1798 bought 42 acres of land in Greene County Georgia. He the sold the land in 1799 to Richard CONINE also of Greene County Georgia. From Greene County, it appears that Robert went to Jackson County Georgia, that county having just been formed in 1796. About the same time that Robert CONINE was moving to Jackson County, Georgia, there, was a James HUIE and wife Mary LYNN who were also taking up residence in Jackson Co. The year is probably around 1800 or perhaps even a few years earlier. They had several children, Margaret, Pheby, Mattie, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Robert. Upon moving to Jackson County, Georgia, it is found according to some deed records that the CONINE'S and HUIE'S were neighbors. They also bought and sold land from each other. And Robert CONINE'S daughter Sarah married David HUIE, the son of Joseph. About 1825, new land opportunities opened up again. People felt the urge to move on. The CONINE and HUIE families took advantage of the opportunity to settle in a newly formed county named Fayette County Georgia. The HUIE family moved first By 1827 Robert CONINE had died in Jackson County Georgia. Shortly after his death his son William Y. moved to Fayette County Georgia There was a church formed there about 1825, and it was called Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. Just about all of the Robert CONINE and James HUIE families were members of this church. The Church Session Records are proof of that. Eleanor Terrell who lives in Georgia has done extensive research on the HUIE an LYNN families. According to the will of a Robert HUIE, recorded in Mendham Morris County, New Jersey, 1788, the will mentions a David(KANINE) CONINE married to his daughter Elizabeth, in addition to mentioning a son James. Another known fact according to Eleanor's research is the 1850 Fayette County Georgia Census, in which Joseph HUIE a son of James HUIE states his birthplace as New Jersey. The Philadelphia Presbyterian Church Session Records state" CONINE Nancy 19 May 1833-received from church at Mendham, Jackson County Georgia. The, community of Mendham was inhabited by the earliest settlers of Jackson County Georgia, the CONINES and HUIES being among the earliest of those settlers. Did they perhaps name their little settlement after the town in which they originally came from, Mendham Morris County New Jersey? Eleanor Terrell's research and knowledge of the LYNN family was very limited, especially the question of where the LYNN family came from originally. The only known fact at the time was that Mary LYNN was married to James HUIE. However further research produced a document describing how in 1767 in Mendham, Morris County New Jersey, Robert HUIE in exchange for a certain amount of money, sold parcel of land to an Alexander "LINN" of Somerset County New Jersey. Research indicates there was an Alexander LYNN of Somerset County New Jersey who had a daughter Mary. However there is no further information regarding Mary that I know of at this time.
