He moved with his father's family to Louisiana in 1858. Then moved TO Castro Landing in March of 1868. Moved again to Texas and settled on a farm near Osage near Coryell Church. He returned with his father to Mississippi driving a herd of horses. This was in 1874.
He spent three years in Mississippi and Tennessee and completed a course in dentistry at Memphis, Tennessee in 1877.
January 17, 1877 he married Nancy Jane Grice and returned to Texas to live with his father's family. Elizabeth Grice, Nancy's older sister, joined them. Later they moved into a log cabin on the west side of the farm, where children were born.
He took an active interest in civic affairs, local and state politics, Masonic and Knights of Pythias orders. He was a Baptist. He kept well informed through daily newspapers and continuous reading. He had a small well-chosen supply of books in his office and at home and encouraged his family's reading. He was very fond of music and urged his children to learn to play some instrument. He encouraged higher education for his children. He and his wife both took part in singing in the church choir. He sang bass and she sang alto. There was always music in their home. The girls played the piano, the rather the violin, the boys guitars and harmonicas. They spent many musical evenings with friends and neighbors.
He took pride in the orchards and his cows. He built up a small herd of pedigreed Jerseys. Nancy took care of the flowers, vegetable garden and chickens. The children did the chores: milking, wood gathering, weeding and feeding of the animals.
He was accidentally killed on May 21, 1904.
