As a boy he settled on the Oconee River in Georgia. He moved to Louisiana about 1790 with his family, then to Mississippi and was one of the pioneers of that state. He died near Boque Chitto, Lawrence County.
He fought in the battle of Cowpens and was in the famous retreat of Morgan and Greene. He was then about 15 years old. While with a Colonial officer one day, an accidental meeting took place with an English officer who would have killed the Colonial officer had not Henry shot him down before he could fire. For that he was rewarded by the gift of an excellent stud, bridle and saddle. He was cool and fearless and honored by his comrades. He was a bear hunter and well adapted to frontier life.
