- Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution
Sampson is listed in Stub Indents as having received 2 pounds, 17 shillings for serving a tour of 40 days duty, in 1782, for the Revolutionary Colonial Forces, Sampson was probably born between 1760 - 1770.
===
1790 census, SC, Georgetown dist.
Shoemake, Sampson
**There are 6 non-white household members listed (non-white probably due to Native American blood) so by the dates of the known children - there are 1-2 more unknown children at this time.
Name - # of "other" free non-white in household
Shoemake, James, 7, (brother)
Shoemake, James, Jr. 4, (father)
Shoemake, Sampson, 6
Shoemake, Solomon, 4, (brother)
Listed as "other free person" indicating mixed or Indian blood
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Sampson's father is in his own household - so at least 4 of Sampson's children were born prior to the 1790 census.

Sampson's father appears to have died between the 1790 and 1800 census. Daughter Sarah was married in 1797.
Charlotte, Martha "Patsy" both appear to have married between 1800-1810 so they would be reflected in the 10 household members shown here. (Along with Sampson and wife Mary Owens Shoemake)
So there are 2 more children born before 1800 that may or may not still be in the household at this point.

Marion Co. Plat Book A, page 129, 7 Oct. 1803, surveyed for Samson Shoemake by John Russ, Deputy Surveyor; 365 acres on NE side of Great Peedee River between Catfish & Gum Swamps bounded by John Bethea, Samson Shoemake, Grief Whittington, Christopher Dew, Andrew Berry, Jonathon Tart & Joseph Bass; entered in location office 8 Oct 1803.
On 18 Jan 1820 John Sanders signed a deed that was apparently made back on 7 Jun 1794 to Sampson Shoemake for 500 acres between Catfish and Gum Swamp. Witnesses were Archibald Kerby and Hardy Greaves. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I, page 147).
===
Samposn Shumate is listed in a Marion Co SC deed dated 12 Mar 1805.
Sampson Shumate sold to Burrell Whittington a tract of land containing 100 acres orgiinally part of a tract of 1000 acres granted to Christopher Dow dated Oct 13 1803 on the north side of Gum Swamp waters of Pee Dee River. Nov 20 1812 in presence of William Faulk and Bleckley Shumate.
Sampson Shumate sold Sampson Faulk his grandson and son of William Faulk of Marion District 100 acres (CBS Bounded by) John Mace's land on north side, by George Sevant's land, east by Archiball McClelland's land west by Boss' land dated Mar 12 1825.
**Beverly's note - the fact that Sampson sold Burrell Whittington (husband of Sarah Shoemake) 100 acres makes it more likely that Sarah is his daughter rather than his sister as Sarah was first thought to be. Sarah's age was originally estimated by her husband's birthdate - later census shows she is somewhat younger - b.1779-1780 - too young to be James Sr. daughter. And we know that Sampson's land is bordered by Grief Whittington's land.
