Note that Mathena ANGEL lives next door to Newton JETT on both 1840 and 1850 census. Is she the Geney ANGEL who is listed on Hercannus' death certificate as his mother? (Harcannus' son E.M. JETT was the informant.)

Some descendants of Newton and Elizabeth (CLOUD) JETT were told she was Indian. This is not unusual in CLOUD families because they believe it is a Native American name when it can be traced to medieval England. Research almost always fail to find any supporting evidence for these beliefs (N.B. the CLOUD DNA Project), but there are instances where CLOUD men have married Native American women and that may be the case here. Some even surmise that Matheny and / or Elizabeth were Indian women taken as their families were being removed on the Trail of Tears, but the protests began in February of 1838 with the first removal commencing in June 1838 and the main contingent not leaving until October. Some from North Carolina travelled through southwestern Kentucky (Christian county, some 200 miles SW of Breathitt county), making it unlikely anyone in Breathitt would have witnessed the event. Per the 1840 census, Matheny had a son by 1825 and Elizabeth by at least 1835, so they could not have been on the Trail of Tears.
