- Obituary:
Maybelle Bozeman Carwile, 94, a resident of Jackson MS, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011, due to complications from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). At the time of her death she was surrounded by her loving family with whom she made her home - her daughter Carol Head, her daughter-in-law Cappy Page, and her grandson, Tom Head.
Services were held at 2PM Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City, Alabama, conducted by a cherished family friend, the Rev. Michael Gray of Jackson, Mississippi, and Bill Etheridge, pastor of First Methodist Church in Alexander City. Burial was in Hillview Cemetery Maybelle was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert Carwile, as well as grandson David Head, great grandson James Head, sisters Dot Bozeman, Laura Emily Elliott, Nathalie Bozeman, Elinor Sue Bennett, Carlene Warnick, and brothers Joe Bozeman, V. N. Bozeman, Jr. and Jim Bozeman.
Born in Syracuse, New York on January 4, 1917, the sixth of eleven children of Vincent Nathaniel Bozeman and Jennie Dodson King Bozeman, Maybelle was granddaugher of James Michael Bozeman and Laura Bell of Autauga County, Alabama, and James Hunter King and Nancy Emily Pursley of Sumter county, Georgia. She grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, graduated from Phillips High School, and was a graduate of Auburn University, where she earned a B.S. in Elementary Education. She taught first and second grade in Florence, Russellville, Alexander City and Camp Hill, Alabama, and also worked for several years at Russell Manufacturing Company in Alexander City. From the time she moved to Mississippi until her retirement, she taught in the Hinds County school system. She had a love for and dedication to special needs students and provided additional resourcing to those children who needed it, in the years before there were state-provided special education programs.
Maybelle was an active participant in the home schooling of her grandsons and a great-grandson, as well as providing love, support and encouragement in every facet of the lives of all of the members of her family.
While living in Alexander City, Maybelle was an active member of Russell Mills Church, then a charter member of Trinity Methodist Church. She taught preschool and/or nursery Sunday School classes and was a member of the Missionary Society for much of her lifetime. In Jackson, she was an active member of Epworth Memorial United Methodist until its closure, then became a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist, to which she belonged at the time of her death.
In addition to Carol, Cappy and Tom, she is survived by grandson Jim Head (Kathy) and granddaughter Debbie Hardy (Dennis); great grandsons Anthony Gannon (Kim), Mike Gannon, Dorothy Hood (David), Robby Escobar, Eric Escobar, Allison Head, Stephen Head and Nathan Head; great-great grandchildren Justin and Hannah Hood; brother Jud Bozeman (Ruth), sister Sally Frey (Raymon), sister-in-laws Louise Grogan (Jesse), Sarah Hughes (Woodrow) and Beatrice Waide (John) and a host of beloved neices and nephews.
The family would like to extend most sincere gratitude to Dr. Mark Meeks, MD, gerontologist, who was always available to her when needed with his expert care, concern, presence and support, as well as to Fairfax Ewing, LaToya Parker, Mary Darden-Smith, and other wonderful staff members too numerous to mention by name at Sta-Home Health and Hospice in Jackson, Mississippi, who consistently and lovingly provided care for Maybelle in her home during the years of this extended debilitating illness.
