Obituary:
JOHN ALDEN BUMSTEAD, JR. was born on March 23, 1925 in Columbus, Ohio and died peacefully in Houston, Texas on April 24, 2008, surrounded by his daughters and loving wife. John grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, graduating from Isidore Newman High School, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. As a 19 year old Marine, John stormed the beach at Iwo Jima and was awarded a Purple Heart. Following his military service, John's parents enrolled him at the University of Nebraska, as Tulane apparently wasn't interested in a decorated war hero. Upon his graduation as a Cornhusker, John returned to New Orleans where he courted and later married Evelyn Toups Bumstead, the mother of his three daughters. John moved to Houston to work for Holland Mortgage Company and raise his family. He later started his own insurance agency, John Bumstead & Associates, and successfully ran the business for almost 40 years. "Bumper", as he was known to his friends, was truly one of a kind. During his time in Houston, while enjoying the company of his "girls", John loved nothing more than playing golf with his friends at the Houston Country Club, fishing at Lake Conroe and, into his mid-70s, riding motorcycles especially his Harley-Davidsons. John made the first hole-in-one at the "new" Houston Country Club in the 1950s. John was predeceased by his parents, John Alden and Gladys Pettit Bumstead, his sister, Jean Bumstead Crowe, and his grandson, Robert Alden Jewell. John also lost his first two wives, Evelyn Bumstead and Anne McMurray, to cancer. John is survived by his devoted wife, Maxine Zimmerman Davis Bumstead, his three daughters: Evelyn Jewell, Alden Womack and Kathryn Gatewood; their husbands: Bob Jewell, Jack Womack and Tee Gatewood; his grandchildren: Kristen Jewell Dolsen and her husband Brady, Linden and Drew Womack and Thomas and Sarah Gatewood; his niece, Jeannie Heidi and her husband Eb; and by Maxine's son and daughter, Tommy and Gail Davis. The Bumstead family extends their heartfelt thanks to Ruthie Hubert for over 45 years of love and unselfish service and, more recently, to Yesi Baide, both of whom cared for him so tenderly. A memorial service will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 28th of April 2008 at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas 77056. Honorary Pallbearers are all his friends from the Red Room. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be given to St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas 77056, or to The Brookwood Community, 1752 FM 1489, Brookshire, Texas 77423.
