    • When Newitt came to Texas in the 1840's, he was married to Elizabeth Macon.  He had two daughters by her: Mary and Ophelia.  After Elizabeth's death, he was working and living on the estate of James Bell, a wealthy planter who had come to Austin's colony in 1822. Newitt caught the attention of Bell's 16 year old daughter, Rebecca, and they were married against her father's wishes.  Newitt later became manager of the Jared Groce's plantation in Waller/Grimes counties.  Groce was known as the "Father of Cotton" in Texas.  Newitt Cloyd was appointed Sheriff of Austin County Texas in September, 1865.  He was robbed and killed on the streets of Hempstead Texas in late 1868 or early 1869, allegedly while being robbed of a load of grain he was taking to the mill.
Newitt along with his brother Hiram and sister Mary are mentioned in his grandfather's will, Noah Doddridge in Clarke County, Alabama.
