He owned a plantation in what is now on the Waller/Grimes county line. He had 7777 acres of land there plus 1111 acres in Fayette County and he owned quite a few slaves at the time of his death. James Bell received an addtional 3/4 league of land after he had married in conjunction to an original 1/4 league when he came to the territory of Texas as a single man. He married Margaret Grimes d/o George Grimes and Eurydice Gardner in Washington County in 1832 and their first child Rebecca Bell was born in 1833 in Austin County. His property adjoined Jared Groce's on the east and the Brazos River on the west. It stretched along both sides of HWY 6 south of Courtney Texas for a distance of almost 6 scenic, rolling miles. He and his brother Thomas bought a league of land in 1825 from William Smeathers. This land was later sold to Cochran and his wife Margaret in later years gave a quit claim to the land. The Raccoon Bend oilfield is now the land that they had orignially purchased from Smeathers. The deeds are in the old Spanish Records of the Austin County Courthouse.
Along with his brother Thomas he co-founded the town of Bellville, Austin County, Texas. He married Margaret Grimes d/o George Grimes and Eurydice Gardner in Washington County in 1832 and their first child Rebecca Bell was born in 1833 in Austin County. Margaret was the sister of Abigail Grimes who married James' brother Thomas Bell. Both sisters were born in Tennessee and came to Texas with their parents in 1827.
