    • -
As a teenager, he moved with his Uncle Charles to Mississippi.  He later fought at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend with Andrew Jackson during the war of 1812.  He married Elizabeth Smith around 1816, probably in Jackson Co., MS.  They had the following children:  Jacob Leroy, Robert S., William, Levi Hugh, John Wesley, Alpha, Ebenezer and Martha.
Charles Sherwood was Justice of the Peace of Jackson County in 1815 and 1824.  He was a Constable in 1820 and was Sheriff of Jackson Co. in 1828.  He also served in the Lower House of the Mississippi Legislature in 1840 and 1841.
Around 1846, Charles Sherwood took his family to East Texas and settled near what is now Village Mills.  This area became known as the Holland Settlement as his children stayed in the area and built farms of their own.  Also arriving in Texas with Charles Sherwood were his slaves.  Together, they helped build the houses and the first roads in the area.  The Hollands were also friends with the Alabama-Coushatta Indians, who sometimes camped on their property.  One of Charles' slaves, a midwife named Ann, died in 1849 and was the first person buried in what would become the Holland Cemetery.  Originally, this land was part of the garden.  Charles' wife, Elizabeth, died shortly after and was buried there also.

HOLLAND, TEXAS (Hardin County). Holland (Holland Settlement) is a half mile west of U.S. Highway 69/287 and a mile south of Village Mills in north central Hardin County forty-one miles north of Beaumont. The community was established by Charles Sherwood Holland in the late 1840s. Early settlers raised stock and ran small farms, but logging became more important in the area after the railroads came into northern Hardin County in the 1880s. A few scattered dwellings remained at the site of Holland in the 1980s.
