- He appears in the 1832 Tax Digest for Decatur, County, Georgia and in the Decatur County, Georgia census in 1840, and 1850. In 1850 he is listed with his wife Phebe, sons Daniel Jr., John, Reuben, Four daughters, Elizabeth, Eliza, Joann and Sarah.
He reportedly died of gangrene.
Anthony Lock wrote: "In the 1860 Jackson County, Florida Census, his brother John Cloud was living in Marianna Florida. Daniel enlisted in the Civil War on, 11 Aug 1862, at Merritt's Bridge, Jackson County, Florida. I believe that during the 1860 census Daniel may have been moving to Jackson County, Florida at the time. He enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Florida Infantry, Company E. His enlistment papers gave his description, Height: 5'3", Eye Color: Hazel, Hair Color: Dark, Complexion: Dark. He would later be moved to the 11th Regiment, Florida Infantry Company: A.
The 11th Florida Infantry Regiment was organized in June 1864 in Virginia from the 4th Florida Infantry Battalion, 2 companies from the 2nd Florida Infantry Battalion, one being Company E that Daniel enlisted with, and one independent company. Colonel Theodore Brevard commanded the 11th Florida Infantry, which was assigned to Finegan?s Brigade in August 1864, where it served with 2nd, 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th Florida Infantry Regiments. Finegan?s Brigade was attached to Mahone?s Division, Third Army Corps (A. P. Hill). They lost their battle flag at the Battle of Sailor?s Creek to Aaron S. Lanfare, a 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 1st Connecticut Cavalry. General Custer?s cavalry captured the regiment. Colonel Theodore Brevard was the last officer to be appointed a general by the Confederate government but was captured at Sailor?s Creek before he was told. The 11th surrendered at Appomattox in April 1865 with less than 25 men and officers, Daniel was one of the men captured.
During the Civil War many wounded soldiers died from Gangrene. Those who had limbs amputated during the war would die even years after the war had ended from complications with an injury. When I had read that Daniel died in 1869 from Gangrene I wondered if, maybe during the war, he lost a limb and died from Gangrene years later. I could not find any proof of an injury during my research.
I did find that Daniel was a prisoner of war, he was captured at Harper's Farm Virginia on April 6, 1865 during the Appomattox Campaign. He was released June 9, 1865."
