    Notes
    • This family historian remembers "Uncle Jim" very well and with fondness.  His house was the last Cloud dwelling as one traveled into Jeffrey's Cove.  The house set on a bluff overlooking Cloud's spring.  When Uncle Jim went out or in the cove, he would stop most of the time for a visit with his brother and my grandfather, Joe Cloud.  Sometimes they would just sit on the front porch and whittle or swing in the porch swing and say only a few words.  Other times they would discuss politics or the news of the day.  But the conversations I most enjoyed were when they would tell stories about "way back yonder."  Both men had wavy hair and long, flowing mustaches.
Another of my fond memories was listening to the mournful sounds of the whistles of the hugh steam engines pulling the trains up and down the valley.  Those sounds would echo and reverberate through the countryside as the train passed on it journey.  Uncle Jim claimed he could listen to the way the whistle was being sounded and not only tell where the train was at the time but who was the engineer.  James Polk Cloud was a brakeman for the old Southern Railway during the heyday of railway passenger service.
James and his wife, Martha McGhee Cloud were buried in Old Baptist cemetery near Edgefield, Jackson county, AL.  Three of their children, James W., Tedd, and Eva were also buried there.  James W.'s body was later exhumed and re-buried in Tuscumbia, AL.
Note:  Jeffrey's Cove was sometimes spelled "Jeffries Cove."
