He tried to make a living and raise the two little girls, but ultimately decided he couldn't handle it. He tried to get a niece of his late first wife and her husband (who was his nephew) to raise both girls, but they would only take Zula and only if they could raise her as their own. Tom finally agreed. Nancy went to live with her married first cousin. Tom died of Typhoid Fever in 1888. The family decided it would be in Nancy's best interests to get rid of the memories of her own family and burned all of Tom and Susan's belongings while the hysterical child, Nancy, watched. She was only able to salvage a couple of scraps of a quilt made by Susan.
Nancy and Zula saw each other every few years. Zula was made to work hard at an early age and Nancy once tried to kidnap Zula while on a visit because of how hard she had to work. The step-brother caught them before they got away. Nancy was 16 and Zula was 8 at the time.
