- The Gale surname can be found in Virginia records as early as the late 1600s. One Gale family compiler has recorded that Josiah Gale's sister, Lucy Catherine, was born in Essex County, VA. The Essex County, VA tax, deed and marriage records prove that the Gale, Faulconer, and Conduit families were all living in the county in the mid 1700s. Josiah Gale and Sarah Condiut married in Essex County sometime before 1750 and eight children were born to the union. Josiah and Sarah (Conduit) Gale bought 100 acres of land in Essex County from Thomas Powell on 16th September, 1776. Nicholas Faulconer witnessed the deed. Josiah and Sarah sold 100 acres to Nicholas Faulconer on 19th August, 1779.
Josiah Gayle signed his last will and testament on August 1, 1791 in Chesterfield County, VA. He appointed his eldest son, James, and his brother-in-law, Thomas Lafon, as the Executors of his will. He left his estate to his widow until she either died or remarried at which time the estate was to be divided among the eight children. Witnesses to the will were Chesterfield County friends William Fleming and Burkinhead Pitts.
Josiah died between August, 1791 and April, 1795. An inventory of his estate was entered in the record and his will was probated in Chesterfield County, VA in April, 1795.
Sometime between April, 1795 and October, 1805 Josiah's widow, Sally, migrated with seven of her eight children to Smith County, TN. James Gayle had led the way earlier by migrating from Chesterfield County, VA to Hawkins County, TN by way of NC.
