The Cloud Family

14

On 4 mo. 1, 1666, he purchased of his brother Robert Cloyd 200 acres of land lying in Chichester township and he may have lived there for some time, though his name does not appear on the tax list of 1693. By his father's will he fell heir to 100 acres of the paternal estate. He was evidently an early settler of Caln township, Chester County, which took its name from his native place in Wiltshire. He was in all probability a resident there in 1709, as in April of that year two of his sons, named as of that township, were defendants in a law suit. He was a taxable there in 1715 and died there about 1720.

The minutes of the Board of Property of the Province of Pennsylvania, edition of 1893, contains a few items concerning the land transactions of William Cloud, Jr., as follows:

1 mo, 5th, 1715-6. William Cloud, of the County of Chester, desires a Warr't for taking up Lotts and Lib. Land belonging to the Original Purchase of 250 acres made by William Beser, and also an addition to the Lott of his own Purchase, that the same may be in Proportion to Lotts laid out to the like quantity of Lott purchased, which is granted and warr't signed, dated the 9th 7 month and 15th 7 month, A. D. 1716. (Page 606)

18th 1 mo., 1717-8. The following Patents and Warrants were signed at Sundry Times as they were made, out to the Grantees:
John Stevens and William Baser 250 each
Richard Ap Thomas in full of his Demand.
William Cloud 500. Etc., etc. (Page 634)

Upon an agreement made with William Cloud, Jun'r, of Concord, for 800 acres back in Chester County, for £20, Money of this Province, for the whole, and one Shilling Sterling quitr't for each Hund'd acres. A Warrant is signed, dated the 18th 1st month, 1818, (Page 649)

23d 7b'r, 1727. In the year 1715 Wm Cloud obtained A Warr't for 300 Acres of Land to be laid out in Chester County, which by a writing under his hand he assigned his interest in the said Warr't to his Son, Joseph Cloud, who in the year 1718 had 200 Acres in vertue of the said Warr't surveyed to him on a Branch of the Conestogo and in the first Month, 1720, paid £10 in part, and since by Deed dated ye 1 of Way, 1725, Conveyed all his right in the said Land to Nathan Evans, jun'r, of the said County, Millright, who has now paid the remainder, with Interest ant quitrent. (P. 752)

The will of William Cloud, of Caln, cordwainer, made 11 mo. 19, 1616-7, and proven December 16, 1720, is recorded at West Chester, in Will-Book A 1, page 105. He names his wife Grace, his sons Jason, Joseph, Richard and William, and his daughters Susanna and Esther. Executors, wife Graoe and son Jason.
